On Not Voting

October 05, 2004

Paul J. Griffiths makes the case in Commonweal for why Christians should not vote–at least not for Kerry or Bush. Read the accompanying “viewpoints” where Robert Royal, with some reluctance, stumps for Bush in the belief that Bush will prevent further entrenchment of Roe v. Wade. Thomas Higgins endorses Kerry, apparently because Higgins is inspired by the wisdom of Bruce Springsteen.

Pay attention to these men’s different perceptions of the stakes in this presidential election, and mull that over if you find yourself thinking according to the soft relativist script of late liberalism: “Ah, three smart, reasonable Christians can all see good reasons to vote for either candidate–or neither.”

Addenda: Andy Crouch is approaching the polls with fear and trembling, and will attempt to “discern” which party has more “potential for change–in biblical terms, for repentance. Is it more likely that the party of justice [i.e., the Democrats] can repent of its indifference to righteousness, or that the party of righteousness [i.e., the GOP] can repent of its deafness to justice? I have to choose one, but I will pray for both.

Really Andy, you don’t have to choose one of those two–or any candidate.
