Epidemic Continues; Limbaugh Offers Free Therapy
November 17, 2004
AlterNet reports on the plague of PESTS (Post Election Stress and Trauma Syndrome) that has descended upon liberals nationwide:The symptoms vary region to region and person to person, but the general diagnosis is the same: severe disorientation, melancholy, a need to be around like-minded others and a lingering fear that the country is going to hell in a handbasket. …More from the Boca Raton News:
Doctor Alan Steinbach, an emergency room physician and professor of public health, applauds people’s efforts at curing themselves, but cautions against expecting immediate results. He says PESTS is a serious disease that could last up to four years. “Patients should be kept well-hydrated and active and should stay in regular communication with other people, ” he recommends.
Dr. Steinbach also warns that sufferers from PESTS may feel a bit fragile and cynical, and that telling them to “get over it” and “move on” might just make symptoms worse. Instead he suggests that friends of those suffering give them time to heal, flowers and other nice presents until they are ready to re-emerge.
Mental health officials in South Florida blasted Rush Limbaugh on Monday, saying the conservative talk show host’s offer of “free therapy” for traumatized John Kerry voters has made a mockery of a valid psychological problem. … “[I]if anybody on the left wants some serious therapy here and counseling, I’m more than willing to offer my assistance as well,” Limbaugh said on Nov. 9.
On Nov. 12, accused … of picking up the story [about PEST] to rub it in the faces of Democrats, Limbaugh said, “Now, my friends, I didn’t do that. I reached out. I offered a hand of friendship. I offered my own counseling services.”
AHA officials, listening to the taped broadcasts, described Limbaugh’s tone of voice as sarcastic.
12/4–”they have a right to these feelings.”
“We mostly let them vent during the first session,” Gordon said. “By the third session, we’ll be doing some meditation exercises to aid some of their symptoms. We may use visualization and some techniques designed for bipolar disease and other mental disorders. That might help them adjust to reality.”
“In interviews with the Boca News, Schooler said many of the Kerry supporters had visited him for severe mental problems prior to the election.”
