Another pub(l)ic spectacle from the New Pantagruel

Christus Pantolerator

December 01, 2004

A couple of black-shirted bodyguards turning away a gay couple and racial minorities from a Church worship service and letting in WASPish looking couples. Fade to “Jesus didn’t turn people away. Neither do we.” And then a voiceover with inspirational music and pictures of minorities and a lesbian couple: “United Church of Christ … no matter who you are, you’re welcome here.” (Don’t take that too literally.)

Notice of this UCC (Unitarians Considering Christ?) agitprop and the TV networks that have “censored” it comes courtesy of The Revealer, which ran a UCC press release today, titling it “Jesus Christ: Too Hot for Network TV.”

Nothing terribly new for The Revealer, which has taken a distinctly hard-line, partisan stance on homosexuality-related issues and has yet to repent of the demonstrably erroneous claims in this feature about the (fictional) “homophobic” vote, but it certainly calls into question their claims in their mission statement. Perhaps it is a case of being blinkered by the same biases that paralyze the mainstream religion reporting and cultural attitudes that The Revealer wishes to depart from.

Here is a fine example of that blinkered vision from a blogger who proves that secular leftists don’t have a clue about regular shmoe churchgoers. He writes, “look at the ad because the spot raises the topic in about as innocuous and uncontroversial a way as is imaginable. Homosexuality is never even broached explicitly.”

Most of the “moral values” voters I know would howl with rage if they saw this ad. I can’t imagine much that would be more offensive to them. Yet the left thinks the ad is “innocuous and uncontroversial.” Ironically, in this case, it is the mainstream media (i.e., the censoring networks) that have their finger on the pulse of “the people” they are supposedly out of touch with. They are making a very prudent business decision.

In other news, Alan Wolfe appears to be recanting his pre-election claim that we are one nation after all, thanks to the creeping liberalization of the religious right. Both arguments are correct: we are divided, but the creeping proceeds apace.

Followup:

  • UCC pastor condemns the ad.
  • LeBlanc at GetReligion find the ad “witty,” etc. Mattingly and readers debate it in the comments.
  • NBC says they rejected the ad long ago.
  • UCC retorts.
