Southern School Shakeups
January 22, 2005
Bob Jones III, president of Bob Jones University, announced his retirement today. Louisiana College, a Southern Baptist institution, has elected a controversial president, and Baylor University has demoted or “transitioned” its controversial president. Read about it in the Dallas Morning News, Waco Tribune-Herald, Baylor’s PR site and Christianity Today.
CT promises more coverage tomorrow but has already posted predictably and at least openly biased commentary on the matter by Hunter Baker, the same embedded Baylor PhD student and blogging hack who has stumped in their pages for Sloan before, as well as the NRO and other sources.
The (Northern) Evangelical establishment behind CT has long sustained a narrative of struggle between “conservatives” who oppose the integration of faith and reason and “Christian” higher education advancement schemes as promulgated by George Marsden by means of which it is hoped that the likes of Baylor might become as advanced as the “Christian” Notre Dame. This is a gross and partisan simplification. You can read my further thoughts on this issue here if you haven’t already. (Scroll to end.)
