The New Tolerance
April 15, 2005
You may be surprised to hear it, but I have great admiration for C. H. Spurgeon. A papist knows where he stands with such a man. But today an evangelical talk-show radio host can’t discuss a caller’s suggestion that John Paul II may now reside in the hot place. Some may see this as the fruit of “ecumenism,” but I do not. Working toward unity is one thing; minimizing real differences–in a public forum no less!–and acting as if they don’t exist out of some misplaced sense of propriety or “tolerance” is something else. On a related tangent, here is an interview with Uwe Siemen-Netto on the importance of not forgetting history, particularly Christian history. This is The New Tolerance in The Japery, a part of The New Pantagruel.
