The Public Square (tm)
May 24, 2005
In the latest issue of First Things, Father Neuhaus pays Jeff Sharlet of The Revealer a compliment (and a jibe or two) while disclosing that Sharlet asked him if he minded the use of “The Public Square” as the name for the publication that became The Revealer. (Neuhaus did mind.)How beyond polite of Mr. Sharlett. I never thought to ask Father Neuhaus for his thoughts about the propriety of my irregular column, Swarming the Pub(l)ic Square: A continuing survey of the farce; or, where the folks are given the last word; or, a pointed laugh. I hope it will resume in the next issue of tNP, if pastoral duties do not persist in preventing polemical ones.
