What I Am Reading
June 14, 2005
I’ve been tagged by Major David L. Jones. If I understand the game correctly, I am to answer the same questions Major Jones answered:
1. I do not know how many books I own. Several thousand, I’m sure, not counting library books and periodicals. I do not know what my books are worth, either. Most were purchased used.
2. The last books I bought: Rush Limbaugh’s oeuvre. My betters read the Angelic Doctor, my parishioners read Rush. I am nothing if not a man of the people!
3. The last book I read was Lauren Winner’s Real Sex, in anticipation of my dialogue (for the next issue of tNP) with the renowned strumpet of chastity, Miss Anna Broadway. I have also been picking at Rahner and Balthasar for what they have to say about Hell, since some emerging “post-protestant missional ecumenical catholic neomonastics” are rather exercised about it. Concurrently I am also studying the uber-apocrypha and Enochian magic as well as the works of Herman Doo-ye-weird in an attempt to charitably understand those sorrowful and humorless cusses who weep at my bracing particularism.
But this is all “business” reading. For leisure I am reading vintage issues of Playboy (nothing post-1960) purchased off of e-bay with the extra money I make selling penny indulgences to the village children who have been naughty. I am also reading, this morning, Andy Crouch’s blog, which never ceases to be a source of inspiration, humor, and invigoration of the mind and bodily functions (not necessarily in that order).
4. The five books that mean a lot to me are as follows:
