Another pub(l)ic spectacle from the New Pantagruel

Hold the Line, Simians!

July 02, 2005

The Supreme Court is opening up in a big way, and it seems a safe bet that Terry Mattingly’s prediction will not be far from the reality:

We are about to hear moral conservatives called “radical conservatives,” even if they are Democrats, and Libertarian conservatives are going to be called “moderates,” even if they are total wing-nuts on everything else. There will be no “liberals” anywhere, although there will be religious “progressives” all over the place.

The split inside the soul of the Republican Party is about to be wedged wide open.
Timely it is indeed that CT has seen fit to “discover” and worry over the many Evangelicals who are planning fits of patriotic fervor this coming Sunday–watch out for those red, white, and blue confetti canons!

A CT email newsletter today announces:

A Christianity Today editorial from last week asserted that “The American flag is not the Cross. The Pledge of Allegiance is not the Creed.” With this in mind, many churches are putting more thought into their Independence Day celebrations, and the patriotism levels of this weekend’s worship services will vary widely.
Really? Many churches are “putting more thought into” their “liturgy” (or whatever they call it)–that is to say, holding off on the canons and color guards–because of CT? I believe the “patriotism levels” have always varied widely–widely enough by far to arm the media with ample imagery of “radical conservatives.”

Pity.

Did we mention the Supreme Court is opening up in a big way?

Addendum: This article for the New Yorker demonstrates a better grasp of the alleged “radical right” than CT has with its facile and patronizing riff on the Jim Wallis “God is Not a Republican” horsefeces.
