What Slack?

Father Neuhaus writes that Catholics and Evangelicals should be attentive to and concerned with the onging collpase of of orthodoxy in the ELCA and ECUSA where behind the “issue” of homosexuality lies “the question of the status of normative theological truth, if indeed there is such a thing as normative theological truth, in these bodies.” One of Neuhaus’s parting comments is “As the oldline continues to segue into the sideline, there is no guarantee that evangelicals and Catholics will take up the slack.” This I find puzzling, as I cannot tell what is meant by “slack.” At first I thought the idea was that ecumenical overtures between oldliners and Rome will have been for naught, but more likely it refers to “size, self-confidence, and influence.” But this implies that Father Neuhaus believes orthodox Protestants who leave the “Oldline” will not turn Evangelical or Catholic and/or Evangelicals and Catholics will not appeal to people who would have been orthodox Oldliners. I am not able to imagine the mentality of a person in either category.This is What Slack? in The Japery, a part of The New Pantagruel.
