Comedy in Harper’s
December 26, 2005
The leading feature article in the latest issue of Harper’s magazine is a remarkably detailed description of the United Nations’ scandals and abject failures in recent years–including rampant prostitution rings among UN troops. This essay somehow aspires to advocate for the UN’s redemption (and the world’s) by the installation of Bill Clinton as secretary-general, whom we are told has become larger than life, larger than America, in the “eyes of the world.” I was not expecting such high comedy, but there may be a certain logic to putting Slick Willie in charge of an institution noted for more than one kind of pandering. The following two main features in the same issue concern the Iraq War and are first-rate.This is Comedy in Harper’s in The Japery, a part of The New Pantagruel.
