Of “Uncle Toms”
February 26, 2006
The Lt. Governor of Maryland is running for the US Senate. As a Republican and a black man, the treatment Michael Steele has gotten from Democrats is their usual brand of sanctioned racism. All the arguments offered to justify that racism center on the GOP being bad for black people. That view is obliterated if one looks at other political contests, such as the recent mayoral race in Newark, which was the subject of a documentary that has been nominated for an Oscar. When a black democrat runs against a corrupt old player in the anti-democracy Democrat machine, he too is “white,” an “uncle Tom,” etc. Strangely this sort of thing never registers with the extra-sensitive white liberal “guilties.” Not even the recent nastiness in Detroit gets significant attention. This is Of “Uncle Toms” in The Japery, a part of The New Pantagruel.
